Anybody looking for a chance to put the kiddos on some slot reds or big ugly black drum ought to circle, star and underline Kidfish on their calendar next year. The annual event, hosted by Sea Center Texas, went off without a hitch last weekend as hundreds came out to enjoy the beautiful, mild weather. All around us people's rods were doubled over, and although a few noted the catch rate wasn't as high as expected, everyone seemed to have a great time.
The event is completely free (in fact admission to Sea Center Texas is always free), and is held in one of the stocked ponds that this functioning marine hatchery uses to restock the Texas coast line. All that is needed to participate is a rod, reel and bait. There is a requirement that anglers use barbless hooks, which can easily be converted with a fly tying vice or pair of pliers.
I made the short drive from Houston with my daughter, and even though I may have been a little more excited than her, it was still a great time.
So get the kids out of the house, off the cell phones and check out Kidfish 2019, because everything is better outside!
